Stretched Metal Mesh: An Ecological Slope Stabilisation Solution for New Zealand Copper Mine Tailings Dams
2026-05-13
New Zealand’s environmental regulations require tailings dams to achieve both slope stabilisation and greening simultaneously. Stretched metal mesh creates a composite ecosystem: the mesh structure anchors the tailings to prevent landslides, whilst the apertures allow the roots of native herbaceous plants to penetrate and grow, forming a dual ‘metal mesh + vegetation’ slope stabilisation structure. In a copper mining project on the South Island, this solution achieved an 85% vegetation coverage rate on the tailings dam slopes, meeting the Environmental Protection Agency’s stringent soil and water conservation standards whilst reducing ecological restoration costs.
