Expanded Metal Mesh: A Model Application of the Circular Economy in New Zealand’s Mining Industry
2026-06-05
New Zealand is promoting a circular economy in the mining sector, and expanded metal mesh contributes in two key ways: 95% of decommissioned mesh can be recycled and remelted, reducing solid waste emissions; and during the reprocessing of tailings, the ultra-fine mesh allows for the recovery of metal particles smaller than 0.1 mm. At the South Island Mining Park, this material’s full life-cycle solution has increased ore resource utilisation by 7%. It has been designated by New Zealand’s Ministry for the Environment as a model case of the circular economy, driving the industry towards low-carbon and sustainable development.
