Expanded Metal Mesh: Lightweight Protection for Shaft Hoisting in New Zealand Silver Mines

2026-06-03

Shaft hoisting is widely used in New Zealand silver mines, and expanded metal mesh optimises the system through its lightweight properties: the aluminium alloy mesh weighs only one-third as much as steel plate, and is used for cage guardrails to reduce the load on the shaft; the mesh design balances visibility and safety, facilitating observation by personnel underground. At the Rotorua Silver Mine, this solution has reduced the energy consumption of the shaft hoisting system by 18%, whilst meeting the New Zealand Work Health and Safety Authority’s safety requirements for hoisting equipment.
