Expanded Metal Mesh: The Smart Explosion-Prevention Advantage at Zimbabwe’s Platinum Mine

The Great Dyke platinum mine faces a high risk of gas outbursts. By embedding fibre-optic sensors into expandable metal mesh, gas concentrations and rock mass deformation can be monitored in real time, reducing the early warning response time to 1.8 seconds. During a pilot scheme at the Unki platinum mine, two anomalies were detected 48 hours in advance. Following full-scale implementation, annual production downtime losses were reduced by over US$20 million, driving a 3% increase in Zimbabwe’s platinum output.
