Expanded Metal Mesh: Corrosion-Resistant Recovery Benefits for Acidic Wastewater from Australian Copper Mines

At the Olympic Dam copper mine, where wastewater has a pH of 2.5, expanded metal mesh made from Hastelloy is used as a pre-filtration stage for reverse osmosis membranes, intercepting 98% of suspended solids. Combined with a neutralisation process, this achieves a copper ion recovery rate of 85% and a wastewater reuse rate exceeding 90%, resulting in the annual recovery of 500 tonnes of copper metal, in compliance with Australia’s Circular Economy Act.
