The Use of Temporary Fencing in Ecological Conservation at Irish Wind Farm Projects

A wind farm on Irelands west coast utilises biodegradable temporary fencing made from a weave of flax fibre and seaweed gel. The mesh is coated in bird-warning colours and, in conjunction with ultrasonic bird repellents, helps to reduce bird strikes on wind turbines; the fencing naturally decomposes within six months of the projects completion. In the 2025 County Clare wind farm project, this approach protected 97% of seabird migration routes.
