Stretched Metal Mesh: A Soil Stabilisation Barrier for Environmentally Friendly Rare Earth Mining in Mexico

Mexico imposes strict environmental requirements on the mining industry. Stretched metal mesh fulfils a dual function of ‘protection and ecology’ in rare earth mining applications: when used for slope protection, the mesh openings allow local cactus root systems to penetrate and grow through, achieving a slope greening rate of 70 per cent; when used as an impermeable liner for tailings dams, they prevent the loss of fine particles and, in conjunction with an impermeable membrane, reduce the wastewater seepage rate to below 0.1 per cent. In the Oaxaca rare earth project, this solution has been certified by the Mexican Environmental Protection Agency.
