Expanded Metal Mesh: Fire and Explosion Barriers for New Zealand Coal Mine Tunnels

Fire safety requirements for tunnels in the North Island’s coal mines are stringent. Expanded metal mesh coated with a nano-flame-retardant coating forms a thermal barrier upon contact with open flames, containing the fire within an area of 10 square metres. During the refurbishment of the Corin Coal Mine, this solution achieved New Zealand Fire Protection (NFP) certification, raising the fire safety rating of the tunnels to the highest standard.
